“After 4 years of PC government, Nova Scotia goes to the polls for a rare summer election. Will John Hamm continue as Premier, or will the Liberals or NDP be able to stop the Tories?”

“4 years after the highs of holding the Commonwealth Games, Edinburgh has woken up to a depressed economy and rising fuel bills. Still a prosperous city reigning in tourists and intellectuals as ever, it has a strong unionist edge over Labour, but it could be lost marginally, if Labour wins the UK-wide election. The wealthy west and south traditionally vote Conservative and the industrial north and east traditionally vote Labour. Will anything change in here or will it remain a 1 seat Tory lead?”

“Birmingham, the “Second City of the United Kingdom,” has gone through a further new wave of immigration in the 1980s, ranging from Ireland to non-Commonwealth countries like Somalia. This has caused serious unrest in the city, culminating in the Handsworth race riots in 1981 and 1985. With Neil Kinnock’s re-invigorated Labour, will the people of Birmingham reject Thatcher’s hopes for a third term?”

“By 1989, Prime Minister Margaret’s Thatcher’s leadership was coming under attack from her own party’s MP’s, over her controversial reforms on taxation, introducing the Community Charge, or more infamously known as the “Poll Tax”. After already contesting a leadership challenge in 1989 but winning with ease, Margaret Thatcher faces a really tough test against 3 of her own cabinet ministers.”

“Magaret Thatcher’s Conservatives are hoping for a third term. Neil Kinnock’s Labour has taken a more centrist stance and will be more of a challenge than their 1983 election disaster. The SDP-Liberal Alliance continues, and hope to overtake Labour as the second party. A Thatcher backlash is beginning to take place in Scotland and northern England, but Kinnock has to prove he is electable in the southern counties and London.”

“The Council is a rarity in Scotland: A Lab/Con marginal. This was and still is, a Tory stronghold but with Labour eating at their vote and healthy pockets of Lib Dem support, the Tories are second, one seat behind Labour. Can the Lab/Lib Dem control come to an end, or are the Tory party still licking their wounds from their Government downfall in 1997?”

“London has changed. Things will never be the same after the very first suicide bombings in Western Europe happened here, and people want security and safety. Recent Scandals for Labour and the Lib Dems have caused a crisis in confidence, and the people of London are looking elsewhere. Minority parties are expecting a big break. The Conservatives are going through a renaissance with new leader David Cameron, and are seemingly predicted to knock Labour out of power in Greater London. So can Tony Blair, despite calls for his resignation, defy the odds?”

“Finally, there is optimism for the city of Glasgow 2 years after being Europe’s “City of Culture”. Regeneration is on the way, despite the depressed economy. After 13 years of Conservative British government, Labour are predicted to defeat them. Voters are rallying behind an ever-more dominant Labour Party from a Conservative government that has shown little care for the old shipbuilding industries. However, Labour do not have control of all 11 seats. The SNP took Glasgow Govan in a shock 1988 by-election win. Labour look for a whitewash, but could we see another shock gain or two?”

“Only over a year since the last election, Labour Party leader and Prime Minister, Clement Attlee has called for another, confident of increasing his majority. Or could it be third time lucky for Winston Churchill’s Conservatives? In the six years that have passed since the end of the Second World War, Labour has brought massive and popular changes. Such as the publicly-funded National Health Service, and a welfare state that guarantees care for all ages. However for Glasgow, homelessness is still rife and the famous shipbuilding industry on the river Clyde, a vital part of the war effort, have gone into decline. Glasgow is almost a tale of two cities, reflecting the closeness of the UK-wide election, with the Conservatives leading in the Protestant west of Glasgow, while Labour lead in the Catholic East of Glasgow.”

“Veteran MP Menzies Campbell, after doubts about his leadership over his age and the party plummeting in opinion polls, felt he had to resign. The Lib Dems felt, now that the threat of a 2007 snap general election had gone, that Menzies would do more damage than good over the next year or two. Only 2 candidates have had enough support to stand for leadership. Chris Huhne, who ran in the previous leadership race, is running against the young, inexperienced Nick Clegg. Some say there is little difference between the two, however Huhne takes a more left-wing approch to Clegg. The Lib Dems hope they will have a TV media-savvy, impressive, charismatic leader who will revitalize their fortunes.”
