Republic of the Midlands, 2022

This scenario uses Prime Minister Infinity with the Australian-style instant runoff / preferential voting system and is part of a “splintered states” alternate history that I’ve been working on.

The Republic of the Midlands has been a largely conservative country since the late 1970s, but between frustration over high inflation, the lingering effects of the Covid pandemic, and the retirement of the long-serving and popular Prime Minister Terry Branstad, the opposition Farmer-Labor Party have the best chance at victory since their 2004 defeat. The realignment seen in other nations, with rural and working-class voters moving right and educated middle-class voters moving left, has been diminished – but not entirely averted – in the MIdlands, thanks to the more populist profile of Farmer-Labor. The Conservatives are also facing a challenge from the right in the form of the right-populist National Party, though preference flows from National are expected to favor the Conservatives. (NOTE: Whoever you select as party leaders will be assumed to have been in their position for a period of time already. Hence, the Conservative Party leader is always the incumbent Prime Minister.)
